Janma Lila (जन्म लीला) is the first and most spiritually significant chapter of Krishna's divine story, narrated in the Shrimad Bhagavatam (10th Skandha). It describes why the Supreme Being chose to incarnate, the cosmic forces at work, and the extraordinarily miraculous circumstances of His birth — including a divine prophecy, a royal prison, a torrential midnight rainstorm, and a Yamuna River that parted for the sake of the Supreme Child.
Key events of the divine birth of Lord Krishna
Kansa, the cruel king of Mathura, was joyfully escorting his newly wed sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva when a divine voice (Akashvani) thundered from the sky: "O foolish Kansa — the eighth child of the woman you are escorting will slay you!" Kansa immediately drew his sword to kill Devaki. Vasudeva pleaded for her life and promised to bring every child born to them directly to Kansa. Kansa imprisoned both Devaki and Vasudeva in his dark dungeon and began killing each child born to them, one by one.
As demons multiplied and Kansa's tyranny spread, Goddess Earth (Bhudevi) could no longer bear the burden. She took the form of a cow and went to Lord Brahma weeping. Brahma, along with all the gods, traveled to the cosmic ocean to pray to Lord Vishnu. The great conch Panchajanya sounded, and Lord Vishnu's divine voice assured them: "I shall descend as the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura. All the gods shall be born in the Yadu clan to assist me. Be patient."
On the Ashtami (8th tithi) of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month — a dark, stormy midnight — something extraordinary happened in the Mathura prison. The prison cell glowed with divine light. All guards fell into deep sleep. The chains on Vasudeva and Devaki snapped open on their own. The prison doors swung open. Lord Krishna was born — four-armed, bearing the conch, disc, mace, and lotus, dressed in yellow, crowned with a divine gem. Devaki and Vasudeva wept tears of divine bliss. The Lord then transformed Himself into an ordinary infant.
Vasudeva placed the infant Krishna in a basket and set out for Gokul in the torrential rain. The Yamuna River was flooded and raging. Yet when Vasudeva's feet touched the water, the river parted — making way for the Supreme Lord. The divine serpent Shesha spread his hoods over the basket to shelter the child from rain. Vasudeva crossed safely and reached Gokul where Mother Yashoda had just given birth to a daughter (actually the goddess Yogamaya). Vasudeva placed Krishna beside Yashoda, took the daughter, and returned to the prison.
When Kansa rushed in to kill the eighth child, he found it was a girl. He grabbed her and smashed her against the prison wall — but she slipped out of his hands, flew to the sky, and revealed herself as the eight-armed Goddess Yogamaya. She laughed and declared: "O foolish Kansa — the one who will slay you is already born and safe far from here. Your end is near." The entire universe reverberated with the sound of divine drums and flowers showered from the heavens. Krishna — safe in Gokul, in Mother Yashoda's arms — smiled His eternal, divine smile.
"They saw that wonderful child — lotus-eyed, four-armed, bearing conch, mace, and disc, marked with Srivatsa, adorned with the Kaustubha gem, dressed in yellow, radiant as a rain cloud."
