📖 श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता — Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

The Bhagavad Gita ("The Song of God") is a 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the epic Mahabharata. It is a divine dialogue between Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide and charioteer Lord Krishna, expounding the eternal paths of Karma Yoga (selfless action), Bhakti Yoga (loving devotion), and Jnana Yoga (transcendental knowledge).

Gita 4.7-8 The Divine Descent

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत।
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्॥
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम्।
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे॥

"Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, I manifest myself. To protect the good, destroy the wicked, and establish Dharma, I am born age after age."

मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥

"You have a right to perform your duties, but not to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of results, nor be attached to inaction."

"The soul is never born, nor does it ever die. Unborn, eternal, immortal, and ancient, it is not destroyed when the physical body is destroyed."

"For those who worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form—I carry what they lack and preserve what they have."

"Abandon all varieties of dharma and simply surrender unto Me alone. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear."

"Just as the embodied soul continuously passes from boyhood to youth to old age in this body, similarly it passes into another body at death. A wise person is not bewildered by this."

"Among the Vedas I am the Samaveda. Among the gods I am Indra. Among the senses I am the mind, and in all living beings I am consciousness."

"While contemplating on the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them. From attachment arises desire, and from desire arises anger."

स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति॥

"From anger arises delusion, and from delusion comes confusion of memory. From confusion of memory comes loss of intellect, and through the loss of intellect, a person is ruined."

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते॥

"Perform your duty equanimously, O Arjuna, abandoning all attachment to success or failure. Such equanimity is called Yoga."

ईश्वरः सर्वभूतानां हृद्देशेऽर्जुन तिष्ठति।
भ्रामयन्सर्वभूतानि यन्त्रारूढानि मायया॥

"The Supreme Lord dwells in the hearts of all living beings, O Arjuna. By His cosmic energy (maya), He causes them to spin as if mounted on a machine."

Gita 3.35 Personal Duty

श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात्।
स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः॥

"It is far better to perform one's own prescribed duty, even though imperfectly, than to perform another's duty perfectly. Death in the performance of one's own duty is better than engaging in another's path, which is dangerous."

मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि प्रकृतिस्थानि कर्षति॥

"The eternal living entities in this conditioned world are My fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind."

तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥

"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it, because it is offered in pure consciousness."

न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः॥

"Weapons cannot shred the soul, nor can fire burn it. Water cannot wet it, nor can the wind dry it."

अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते।
इति मत्वा भजन्ते मां बुधा भावसमन्विताः॥

"I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts."

दुःखेष्वनुद्विग्नमनाः सुखेषु विगतस्पृहः।
वीतरागभयक्रोधः स्थितधीर्मुनिरुच्यते॥

"One whose mind remains undisturbed amidst misery, who does not crave pleasure, and who is free from attachment, fear, and anger, is called a sage of steady wisdom."

Gita 2.50 Skill in Action

बुद्धियुक्तो जहातीह उभे सुकृतदुष्कृते।
तस्माद्योगाय युज्यस्व योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्॥

"One who is united in divine consciousness rids oneself of both good and evil deeds in this life. Therefore, strive for Yoga, which is the art of all work."

यतो यतो निश्चरति मनश्चाञ्चलमस्थिरम्।
ततस्ततो नियम्यैतदात्मन्येव वशं नयेत्॥

"Wherever the restless and unsteady mind wanders, one should withdraw it and bring it back under the control of the Self."

यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत्।
यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम्॥

"Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give, and whatever austerities you perform, O Arjuna, do that as an offering unto Me."

Gita 16.21 Three Gates to Hell

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः।
कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्॥

"There are three gates leading to the self-destruction of the soul: lust, anger, and greed. Therefore, one must abandon these three."

"There is nothing superior to Me, O Arjuna. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls strung on a thread."

मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते॥

"This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who surrender unto Me easily cross over it."

Gita 15.15 Source of All Knowledge

सर्वस्य चाहं हृदि सन्निविष्टो मतः स्मृतिर्ज्ञानमपोहनं च।
वेदैश्च सर्वैरहमेव वेद्यो वेदान्तकृद्वेदविदेव चाहम्॥

"I am seated in the hearts of all living beings. From Me come memory, knowledge, and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known; indeed, I am the author of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas."

Gita 4.39 Faith & Peace

श्रद्धावाँल्लभते ज्ञानं तत्परः संयतेन्द्रियः।
ज्ञानं लब्ध्वा परां शान्तिमचिरेणाधिगच्छति॥

"A person of deep faith, who is dedicated to divine knowledge and has subdued the senses, attains supreme wisdom. Having achieved it, they quickly attain supreme peace."
