Significance and Structure

The **Atharvaveda** differs from the other three Vedas in that it deals more directly with the practical aspects of daily life, healing, statecraft, and protective prayers.

  • Ayurvedic Roots: It is highly revered as the foundational source of **Ayurveda** (the ancient Indian science of life and medicine), listing various herbs, treatments, and charms for healing physical and psychological ailments.
  • Practical Application: Consists of 20 books (Kandas), containing 730 hymns and roughly 6,000 verses. It addresses protective prayers, marital harmony, agricultural prosperity, and code of conduct.
  • Hymn to Mother Earth: Contains the magnificent **Bhumi Sukta** (or Prithvi Sukta), which stands as one of the oldest environmental hymns in human history, praising and expressing deep reverence for the sacred Earth.
