Transliteration & Meaning:

"Indram Mitram Varunam Agnim Ahur Atho Divyah Sa Suparno Garutman,
Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti Agnim Yamam Matarishvanam Ahuh."

Meaning: "They call Him Indra, Mitra, Varuna, Agni, and the celestial bird Garutman. To what is One, the wise give many names; they call it Agni, Yama, and Matarishvan."

Significance and Structure

The **Rigveda** is the oldest known Vedic Sanskrit text and one of the oldest extant texts in any Indo-European language. It represents the foundation of Hindu philosophy, spiritual realization, and ritual practices.

  • The 10 Mandalas: Organized into ten books called Mandalas, consisting of 1,028 hymns (Suktas) which contain 10,600 verses (Mantas/Riks).
  • Cosmic Deities: The hymns are dedicated to cosmic principles personified as deities, primarily Agni (sacred fire), Indra (thunder and lightning), Varuna (moral law and water), and Soma (divine nectar).
  • Philosophical Roots: In addition to praises, it contains deep philosophical questions about creation (like the famous Nasadiya Sukta) and the nature of reality. It is also the source of the holy Gayatri Mantra (found in Mandala 3).
