Bal Lila (बाल लीला) covers the enchanting childhood of Lord Krishna in the pastoral village of Gokul. Narrated in detail within the 10th Skandha of the Shrimad Bhagavatam, these pastimes depict how the absolute supreme consciousness played the role of an innocent, mischievous infant. He stole butter, engaged in sweet play with cowherd boys, baffled His mother with cosmic visions, and effortlessly vanquished powerful demons sent to harm Him.
Key childhood miracles of Lord Krishna in Gokul
Young Krishna had a boundless love for butter, curd, and milk. Together with His elder brother Balarama and cowherd friends (Gopas), He would plan elaborate raids on the butter pots hanging high in the houses of the Gopis. They would form human pyramids to reach the pots. When the Gopis caught Him red-handed, Krishna would offer charming excuses or share the butter with monkeys, earning Him the endearing name Makhan Chor. This lila signifies the Lord stealing the hearts of His devotees.
Knowing the child who would kill him was in Gokul, Kansa sent terrible demons. First came the demoness Putana disguised as a beautiful nurse, intending to breastfeed Krishna with poison. The infant Krishna shut His eyes and sucked her milk, drawing out her life force, liberating her soul into the spiritual world. Later, the whirlwind demon Trinavarta carried baby Krishna high into the sky; Krishna made Himself as heavy as a mountain, choking and bringing the demon down to his death.
One day, Krishna's playmates complained to Mother Yashoda that He had eaten dirt. Yashoda confronted Him and asked Him to open His mouth. The playful Krishna opened His mouth, and Yashoda stood frozen in absolute awe: inside His mouth, she saw the entire cosmic creation — planets, stars, galaxies, directions, oceans, mountains, all living entities, and even Ayodhya, Gokul, and herself looking into His mouth. Overwhelmed by this divine vision, she bowed to the Lord, but Krishna gently wrapped her in His yoga-maya, restoring her maternal love.
To punish Krishna for breaking a butter pot, Mother Yashoda tried to tie Him to a wooden grinding mortar. However, no matter how many ropes she joined, the rope was always two fingers too short. The two fingers represented the devotee's effort and the Lord's grace. Seeing His mother exhausted and sweating, Krishna relented and allowed Himself to be bound. Bound to the mortar, He crawled outside and dragged it between two giant Arjuna trees, which were actually the cursed sons of Kubera, Nalakuvara and Manigriva. The trees fell, liberating them back to their celestial forms.
"I bow to the Supreme Lord, whose form is eternal consciousness and bliss, whose earrings swing, who shines in Gokul. Fleeing in fear of Yashoda, He jumped from the mortar but was caught by her deep maternal devotion."
