The fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the first in the Treta Yuga. Appearing as a young dwarf priest (Brahmin), Vamana approached the generous but proud demon King Bali. He asked for only three paces of land. When granted, Vamana expanded into the cosmic form Trivikrama, covering the earth with one step, the heavens with the second, and placing His third step upon Bali's head, granting him liberation.

"Through all the worlds strode Vishnu; thrice He planted His foot, and the whole universe was gathered in His three footsteps."
Reclaiming cosmic space and teaching absolute humility
King Bali, the grandson of the great devotee Prahlada, was a righteous and generous Asura king. Under his leadership, the Asuras conquered the three worlds, displacing Indra and the Devas from heaven. Determined to secure his domain permanently, Bali began conducting a series of Ashvamedha Yajnas (horse sacrifices) under the guidance of his guru, Shukracharya.
To restore cosmic order and return the heavens to the Devas, Lord Vishnu took birth as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, to the sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi. Vamana visited King Bali's sacrificial hall during his final Yajna. Seeing the radiant young Brahmin, Bali welcomed Him and offered to give Him any gift He desired, whether gold, land, or kingdoms.
Vamana requested a very small gift: only as much land as could be measured by three of His paces. Despite Shukracharya warning him that the dwarf was Vishnu in disguise, Bali's pride in his own generosity led him to pledge the land, pouring sacred water to bind his vow.
Immediately, the dwarf Vamana began to expand into a cosmic form of immense proportions, known as Trivikrama. With His first giant stride, He covered the entire Earth. With His second stride, He covered the celestial heavens and intermediate worlds. Finding no space left for His third step, Vamana asked Bali where He should place His foot. Bali, realizing the true nature of the Lord, surrendered completely. He offered his own head. Vamana placed His foot on Bali's head, sending him to rule the subterranean paradise of Sutala, and promising to serve as his personal gatekeeper. Vamana teaches that pride in one's virtues (even generosity) can be an obstacle, and that absolute surrender of the ego (Atma-Nivedana) is the highest spiritual path.
