The Book of Kishkindha — Ram's first meeting with Lord Hanuman, the sacred alliance with Vanara king Sugriva, the defeat of the mighty Vali, and the dispatch of the Vanara army in all directions to find Sita.

Kishkindha Kanda (किष्किन्धाकाण्ड) has 67 sargas. The most transformative moment of this Kanda — and arguably of the entire Ramayana — is the first meeting of Ram and Hanuman. In that encounter, devotion found its Lord, and the Lord found His greatest devotee. This Kanda is also notable for the morally complex story of Vali and Sugriva.
Key events of the fourth Kanda
Sugriva, the exiled Vanara prince, saw Ram and Lakshmana approaching and sent his minister Hanuman to investigate. Hanuman disguised himself as a brahmin and approached Ram. When Ram saw through the disguise and spoke, he was so moved by Hanuman's wisdom, eloquence, and grace that he said to Lakshmana: "Only one who has mastered the Vedas and grammar can speak like this. I am charmed." Hanuman instantly recognized Ram as his Lord and fell at His feet. This moment — Ram lifting Hanuman in an embrace — is the greatest union of devotion and divinity in all of literature.
Hanuman brought Ram to Sugriva on Mount Rishyamuka. A sacred alliance was formed: Ram promised to slay Vali and restore Sugriva's kingdom and his wife Ruma. In return, Sugriva pledged his entire Vanara army to help Ram find Sita. As a token of trust, Sugriva showed Ram the ornaments that Sita had dropped from the sky while being carried away — Ram wept as he recognized them. Hanuman had preserved them carefully — a beautiful act of devotion.
Vali, the mighty elder brother of Sugriva, had usurped his throne and taken his wife. Sugriva challenged Vali to a duel. As they fought, Ram struck Vali with an arrow from behind a tree. As Vali lay dying, he questioned Ram's justice. Ram explained that Vali had wrongfully taken his brother's wife — a cosmic sin, and that as the protector of Dharma, it was Ram's duty to punish this. Vali accepted this and attained liberation at Ram's feet. His son Angada was entrusted to Sugriva as a prince.
After the rains (Ram waited an entire monsoon season for Sugriva to mobilize), Sugriva dispatched four massive battalions of Vanaras in all four directions — north, south, east, west. The southern army under Hanuman, Angada, and Jambavan was the most critical. Before departing, Ram gave Hanuman his signet ring as a token for Sita to recognize him. The Kanda ends with Hanuman's army reaching the southern sea — facing the impossible ocean separating them from Lanka — and Hanuman realising his divine potential.
