🏺 श्री धन्वन्तरि अवतार — Lord Dhanvantari

The twelfth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Satya Yuga. Appearing from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) carrying a golden pot containing the nectar of immortality (Amrita), Lord Dhanvantari is the divine physician of the gods. He is the father of Ayurveda (the science of medicine and longevity), blessing humanity with healing knowledge.

"We bow to the Lord who holds the pot of nectar, who destroys all diseases, and who protects the worlds with the science of health."

अमृतकलशहस्ताय सर्वभयविनाशाय सर्वरोगनिवारणाय।

🏺 धन्वन्तरि लीला — Legend of the Divine Healer

The emergence of Ayurveda and protection from physical suffering

Lord Dhanvantari first emerged during the churning of the cosmic Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan) by the Devas and Asuras. As they churned, a radiant young deity of incomparable beauty rose from the waves. He had four arms, was clad in bright yellow robes, and held:
1. A conch shell (Shankha) representing cosmic sound.
2. A wheel (Chakra) representing cosmic order.
3. Healing herbs and scriptures.
4. A golden pot containing the sacred nectar of immortality (Amrita Kalasha).

This divine being was Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods. Later, in the Satya Yuga, the king of Kashi, Dirghatamas, performed intense penance to Lord Vishnu, praying for a son who could rid the earth of physical sickness and guide humanity in health. Vishnu granted his prayer and took birth as Dhanvantari, the prince of Kashi.

Dhanvantari structured and revealed the science of longevity and medicine, known as **Ayurveda** (divided into eight clinical branches: general medicine, pediatrics, surgery, toxicology, rejuvenation, etc.). He taught that a healthy body is essential for performing spiritual duties (Dharma) and attaining liberation (Moksha).

Dhanvantari is worshipped on Dhanteras (the first day of Diwali festivities, celebrated as National Ayurveda Day) for health, wellness, and recovery from illnesses. He represents the healing touch of the divine, reminding humanity that physical, mental, and spiritual well-being are interconnected parts of our cosmic journey.
